Etching & Enameling

Genevieve Flynn

Have you always wanted to add color to your work or just want to enamel? Here is your chance to do both.

Students will learn the basic techniques of etching copper in preparation for enameling. Ferric chloride and salt water solutions are the chemicals being used in the etching processes. During the time that pieces are being etched we will start with enamel techniques such as surface preparation and dry sifting. Simple squares of copper sheet will be used for your samples. After dry sifting a base color on your metal and firing, you will then explore sifting over a stencil to create a contrast in your design. We will then go on to cut out shapes and enamel them to create a spinning ring. Your ring will consist of 3-4 geometric shaped, enameled pieces of copper and your ring shank. Genevieve will provide small screws and nuts to attach the pieces to the ring shank when finished.

Students will have the chance to work in opaque enamel and transparent enamels. The transparent enamels work well on the etched surfaces that you will have finished during the first part of the workshop. If time permits students will be able to create a piece of jewelry from the etched sheet.

Genevieve Flynn (Kansas City, Missouri) earned degrees in jewelry design, Jewelry Repair, and hand Engraving, and worked in the industry for nine years before starting her own business. She then begin studying hollowware design at the University of Kansas and studied under Heikki Seppa, Master metalsmith, internationally recognized as the modern father of form emphasis. After 30 years working in precious metals, Genevieve designs elegant hollowware and jewelry. www.genevieveflynn.com
